The 471 submitted applications for this ranking have been reviewed under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Franke from the Vienna University of Economics. The selection of the 100 Top innovators is based on 5 performance indicators: Innovative Processes and Organization, Climate of Innovation in the Organisation, Innovation-friendly Senior Management, Outward Looking/Open Innovation and Successful Innovation.

In 1993, compamedia set up the TOP 100 award to honour the most innovative of Germany’s small and medium-sized companies. Since 2002, Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Franke, founding director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, leads the scientific part of the competition.
